As we come to the end of this trying year, we are all touched by the sadness of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year has challenged the fabric of human society in communities and nations around the world. In addition to the public health and humanitarian crisis, the pandemic’s impact to our political and economic systems have been profound and concerning.
The LRCA has experienced severe financial strain from the COVID crisis. We have cut staff hours in half and are now reducing even further. Thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteer board members, the work of the LRCA and our land trust affiliate, the Lackawanna Valley Conservancy (LVC) continues.
We will begin our 34th year of Watershed Conservation work along the Lackawanna in 2021 with a bit of caution. Depending on the trajectory of the pandemic, we may not be able to resume our usual public engagement activities until 2022. We anticipate the need to conduct more virtual activities and small-scale river stewardship events where a limited number of participants can keep a safe social distance.
As the holidays arrive, we wish the best for everyone. Please, stay safe and stay in touch with the LRCA. We welcome any contribution that you care to make as the year ends. It will literally help keep the lights and heat on at “River House” and ensure that the work of the LRCA and LVC continues into 2021 and beyond.
With the help of volunteers, thousands of tires have been removed from the Lackawanna River Watershed. We are asking for donations because transporting and properly recycling tires at a regional facility costs about $5 each. Due to state regulations, tires can not be taken to local landfills. They need to be taken to tire recycling facilities to be cut up, shredded or recycled to help make cement and asphalt.
For every $5 you donate, a tire that once polluted a habitat can be recycled properly and put to new use, outside of the Lackawanna River!
This is a constant blight within the Watershed. Please consider making a recurring donation.
