A critical pollution source in the river and its watershed is AMD, or Acid Mine Drainage, which results from Abandoned Mine Lands that leak iron oxide and other heavy metals out from underground. Excessive exposure to heavy metals pollutes the river habitat and harms the aquatic species that live in the river.
