Winter Fun on the Lackawanna River

ShiverFest 2026

This non-competitive Extreme Kayak & Canoe Paddle where only the toughest of the tough dare paddle the river will be held Saturday, January 17, 2026, river conditions permitting. Paddlers will travel approximately 2.7 miles of the Lackawanna River in Scranton from the Parker Street Landing to Sweeney's Beach. Paddlers who are willing to brave the winter on the river should have their own vessel, PFD (mandatory) and wetsuit (strongly recommended). Launch is High Noon at the Parker Street Landing. Please check back here or our Facebook page for updates.

The LRCA has joined the American Canoe Association (ACA) as an affiliate organization. Insurance coverage is being provided through the ACA for ShiverFest '26. ACA members are entitled to a discounted registration fee of $10. Please consider becoming a member of the ACA.  Non-ACA members must purchase one-day event insurance for $10, bringing the ShiverFest registration fee to $20.

  • Please register for the paddle here: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/Fvx9DRv9dmGw_IPjJAfh3Q

  • Arrive at launch site (Parker Street Landing) early (11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.) to check in and sign a waiver. This is to help us keep track of paddlers on the river.

  • At the landing site (Sweeney’s Beach), we ask paddlers to please check in with staff or a volunteer so that we can make sure everyone is safely off the river.

  • We are not offering a shuttle service for this short distance paddle. Please make arrangements with other participants/friends or family to retrieve your vehicle.

The LRCA will host a Thaw Party from 1 - 4 p.m. at Groove Brewing, 1401 Sanderson Ave. in Scranton. Preregister for $20 per person ($25 at the door!): https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/LJZlnQ39NU6dh1C3JfZFdg

Admission includes food catered by Fireside Martini Grill, live music by Clamdog, cash bar (ID required), raffle baskets, and camaraderie. Join us for a friendly gathering of the brave paddlers and the family and friends who are on hand to celebrate. Kids are welcome, $10 for age 12 and under.
